I wouldn't homestead to survive a catastrophe of the sort you outline here. I'd do it to learn to become more self-sufficient. On the whole, I think you're right, but I wouldn't want anyone to read this article and feel it's hopeless to do any sort of prepping. The mentality it takes to prep is likely the same mentality that could help someone learn better financial independence, for example.
